The Institute for Metal Forming Technology (IFU) was established in the winter semester of 1958/59 and, since then, has been one of the manufacturing technology institutes at the University of Stuttgart. From its beginnings, basic and application-oriented research projects and development work in the fields of sheet metal and cold forging as well as the development of new types of forming processes have been carried out in the institute's laboratories and facilities.
A major number of the research and development projects of the past decades have resulted in numerous dissertations, which have advanced significant developments in Germany, in Europe or even on a global level in these fields and are now state of the art in forming technology.
Focus of the institute´s research cooperation with interested industrial companies, which often lasts several years, involves the transfer of knowledge, process engineering experience and new technological developments from academic into industrial practice on a pre-competitive basis.
At Blechexpo, IFU will provide an insight into its latest developments in the field of sheet metal forming. Here, research work on sustainable dry forming using volatile lubricants, on the implementation of lightweight solutions by manufacturing folded structures from sheet metal or by using embossed structural components, on data-driven solution approaches and on the latest process developments in sheet metal forming will be presented.
